MASE at the “Regional Symposium on Climate Mobility” in Africa: international cooperation for innovative solutions

Climate mobility Africa: Italy backs Nairobi summit

Press Release

The three-day event brings together representatives from governments, academic institutions, the private sector and operators engaged in adaptation, risk reduction and development in Africa, alongside technical experts in climate action and mobility.

The Symposium is a platform for dialogue and co-creation to discuss strategies for identifying and mitigating risks related to climate mobility, with a particular focus on resilience and anticipatory action in communities affected by climate change.

Among the key initiatives is the development of the Risk Index for Climate Displacement (RICD), an innovative tool designed to identify the most vulnerable areas and promote targeted interventions for adaptation, resilience and preparedness.

The official opening was attended by prominent figures, including a delegation from the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, a presence that underlines Italy’s commitment to strategic partnerships with IOM. The collaboration aims to develop concrete tools to anticipate and manage climate risks before they turn into displacement crises, promoting integrated, data-driven and people-centered approaches.

“The Symposium represents a fundamental opportunity for exchange and for strengthening the capacity to act on climate mobility challenges in East Africa and the Horn of Africa,” said Roberto Amerise, Head of the General Affairs, Financial Programmes and International Cooperation, Finance and Sustainable Development Division of the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security.

“Italy, through the Mattei Plan for Africa, the Rome Process and related financial instruments, promotes a structured and long-term dialogue with partner countries, based on an equal partnership approach and oriented towards shared growth and the enhancement of local priorities. Initiatives such as the Climate Mobility Innovation Lab are fully aligned with this vision,” he added, “and pursue solutions based on concrete data and strong community engagement.”

Among the topics addressed during the three days of work, particular attention will be given to policy, governance and financial priorities related to climate mobility, with the participation of African governments, regional and international organizations, and donors. A specific focus will be dedicated to IGAD countries, including Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda, where the RICD will be implemented at the national level.
